Kansas City Craft Beer

I recently paid a visit to the Heart Of America Kansas City, MO where I was able to dabble in a few of the local craft brews that they had to offer. I was down in Kansas City to compete in the SIFE (Students In Free Enterprise) USA National competition. Just like every travel opportunity I am given I have to find a beer bar that I can sample craft beer local to the area. Kansas City certainly did not disappoint with their draught emporium The Flying Saucer, located in the newly constructed Power and Lights District.

Craft Beer Kansas CityThe Flying Saucer had an amazing atmosphere with all sorts of eclectic items scattered throughout the walls of the pub. Their tap wall had pennies all over it while their sign had quarters around the border. Their menu consisted of burgers, sandwiches, and pizzas. The burgers were amazingly good. The bottom line, if your looking for BBQ in Kansas City than this is not your place. If your looking for 200 beers and great comfort food, than this is your place. Let’s get to the topic at hand, beer.

Like I said before, Kansas City is doing great in the craft beer scene. I went to the Flying Saucer during their tap night when they were showcasing 6 beers from Mother’s Brewing Company. This flight had a variety that I loved from an American blonde ale to their Foggy Notion barley wine. Everyone at the table loved the barley wine with it’s unique flavor. I loved the Imperial Three Blind Mice. It had a subtle coffee, chocolate, and malty taste to it throughout. Money well spent and Kansas City craft beers well consumed.

I also tried a few local beers from Boulevard Brewing Company. I tried their Pale Ale, Unfiltered Wheat, and the Tank 7 Saison (my favorite). Boulevard beer to Kansas City seemed to be like Shipyard beer to Maine. It was in every restaurant and pub we visited in Kansas City. Their wheat was nice and smooth and had a great flavor. Boulevard Talk 7 Saison reminded me of Oxbow Brewing Company’s style of saisons.

Overall I enjoyed the opportunity to try new beers from another state that I have never been before. If you are ever in Missouri and feel like trying something new than you should try either Mother’s Brewing Co.’s or Boulevard Brewing Co.’s local craft beer.
